Succulents, those gorgeous plants with thick, fleshy stems and leaves that collect and store water, can be grown in the ground or in containers.

The 10 Steps for Planting Success apply to succulents other than where noted below: 

Plant in well-draining soil.
A typical succulent mix is one-third potting mix, one-third clean sand (coarse), and one-third pumice.

Experiment.
Try different combinations to discover the right combination for your conditions. A top dressing of crushed granite or pea gravel looks good and keeps the topsoil from drying out faster than the rest of the soil. 

Mulch with fast-draining gravel, lava rock.
For plants in the ground outdoors, amend with crushed lava and mound up the soil to promote good drainage.

No watering after planting needed.
