Long-lasting cut flowers

  • June 8, 2024
  • Are you bringing in cut flowers from your garden for beautiful arrangements? Right now, many gardeners have roses, sweet peas, or zinnias to decorate their table. Do you want the flowers to be long-lasting? If you buy cut flowers, they often come with a packet of preservative.

You can make your own preservative for your own bouquets. Pam Geisel, a University of California Cooperative Extension Farm Advisor, recommends this simple method to make your own preservative. Mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and ¼ teaspoon of bleach in a quart of warm water. This mixture will supply nutrients for the flowers and slow microbial decay.

Always use a clean vase and add more mixture every few days.
