Considerations for coastal gardeners

Sun: a coastal layer of fog blocks sunlight. Be sure trees and tall shrubs are pruned to let in as much light as possible. Capitalize on areas within the garden that get the most sun.

Quick change: A marine layer can change rapidly, suddenly exposing plants to sunshine. Choose plants that are adapted to these coastal conditions.

Wind: Summer weather at or near the coast is often accompanied by wind. Protect vulnerable plants by placing them strategically near fences or walls.
