Gardeners are intrepid souls. Neither success nor failure stops them from growing. We peruse gardens everywhere we go and read anything we can find to help us solve the latest mystery happening in our gardens. We tend to be eager learners who find that often, one answer just leads to more questions. That led me, and many other like-minded folks, to become Marin Master Gardeners. The MMGs are a diverse group of individuals who share a common passion for growing personally and horticulturally. We learn how to share our research-based knowledge of horticulture and sustainable gardening practices with home, school, and community gardeners in Marin. We participate in community outreach through our Help Desk, social and print media, farmers’ markets, talks, demonstrations, the Marin County Fair, and gardens at Falkirk, IVC, and Harvey’s. There are so many opportunities to share your passions in any way you choose.

The MG training program is a busy 18-week overview course. The training classes for 2024 will be held on Thursdays from January 4 through May 2. The classes are taught by faculty and staff of the University of California, local horticultural educators, and Certified Master Gardeners. There is lecture time and hands-on time. Class time will be divided between in-person and Zoom. The class will participate in Farm Day. There is homework and reading outside of class.

You will get training that includes:

    • Botany and plant taxonomy
    • Soil differences and how to make amendments
    • Composting and mulching
    • Plant pathology
    • Insects
    • Invertebrate and vertebrate pests
    • Integrated approaches to pest management
    • Weeds and invasive species
    • Sustainable gardening practices
    • Irrigation practices
    • Growing ornamentals, trees, shrubs, fruits, and vegetables
    • Right plants in the right places – garden planning
    • Fire-smart landscaping
    • Pollinators and beneficials

The class works together as a team, and each new member will be guided by a team of MG mentors. Learning comes from the instructors for sure, but much of the learning comes from the class members themselves as they share their experiences and ask questions. An MG mantra is, ‘I don’t know, but I can find out.’ You will learn a lot, but certainly, not everything there is to know. You will learn how to source the information needed to do your work in the community. No matter what your gardening passion is, you will find a place to use and share your knowledge and enthusiasm. Friendships made and community found are a bonus.

Online applications for the Marin Master Gardener Class of 2024 open on June 20, 2023, and will close on September 2, 2023. An in-person interview may follow. You must be able to complete the entire 18-week training program to become certified.

The Marin Master Gardeners welcome you to join us! Please check out our website for the commitments to becoming an MG and the educational and volunteer requirements moving forward. The cost of the program is $395 and includes all the printed materials needed, plus a few other items. There is scholarship money available.
