Point Reyes National Seashore wildflowers

  • Chimney Rock and Abbott's Lagoon at Point Reyes National Seashore are two of my favorite places to look for wildflowers. Both are beautiful and diverse.

The out-and-back hike to Chimney Rock is about two miles. The trail has some uphill sections; you can expect it to be windy. Look for large clumps, some 10 feet across, of Douglas iris, Iris douglasiana. We think of paintbrush as red-colored; here we find the unusual yellow paintbrush, Castilleja wightii.

The out-and-back hike to Abbott's Lagoon is three miles, mostly level. Some of my favorite wildflowers to spot are pussy ears, Calochortus tolmiei, and marsh marigold, Ranunculus orthorhynchus.
