Hot weather tips

  • July 6, 2024
  • The “dog days of summer” are traditionally July 3 - August 11. This is the time of year when it is often hot—all day and into the evening hours. Sirius, the dog star in the constellation Canis Major, is visible in the nighttime sky. Early Romans believed Sirius caused hot, sultry weather. This is a good time to relax in your garden. Enjoy the colorful annuals and bountiful fruit you’ve worked so hard to grow.

Hot weather tips. On hot days, do your hand watering and flower deadheading early in the morning. (Hopefully, you have your automatic irrigation systems set for early morning, too.) Cutting flowers for bouquets early will ensure they are long-lasting. Getting out before it gets too hot will decrease your risk of too much sun exposure and dehydration. Starting your work early is good for the plants and good for you, too!
