Ground covers

  • November 26, 2022
  • Ground covers are used to blanket bare soil and act to suppress weeds. They may be nearly flat to knee-high; they may have attractive foliage or pretty flowers.

The magazine “Pacific Horticulture” says ground covers are the workhorses of the fire-safe garden. In areas near the home, they offer an alternative with low-fuel volume.

If you have a native plant garden, there are some native groundcovers you should consider. Arctostaphylos ‘John Dourley’ grows 2-4 feet tall and spreads to 6 feet. Baccharis pilularis ‘Pigeon Point’ is 2 feet at maturity and spreads to 12 feet. Ceanothus gloriosus ‘Anchor Bay’ grows to 3 feet and spreads to 6 feet. All of these are adapted to full sun and low water use. Sunset Western Garden book provides many alternatives for horticultural varieties of ground covers.
