Pruning hybrid tea roses

  • February 4, 2023
  • Prune hybrid tea roses now. Cut out crossing branches; remove suckers and dead wood. Cut canes back one-half to one-third. Make the cut above a bud facing to the outside of the plant. This allows more light and air circulation to the center of the bush. Remember to wear gloves when working around roses—rose pricks can be dangerous.

This is also a good time to move those roses you’d like to have in a new location. Bare root plants should be available at your local nursery. You can plant bare root roses now. Bare root plants cost less and start growing more quickly than root bound container plants. Dig a hole wide enough to spread out the roots and deep enough to cover the crown of the root.

Let your nursery person help you decide between floribundas, climbers, hybrid teas and old roses.
