News from the MMG Edible Demonstration Garden At IVOF&G
As you dream about your spring/summer garden you might think back to last year’s successes and challenges. Did you have adequate supports for your tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash? Are repairs needed to your existing structures? Or you might want to purchase ready-made supports for your plants.
The fun in January was perusing the seed catalogs that pile up in your mailbox this time of year. In thinking about last year’s garden, we knew that one thing had to change. The bush Romano Beans (‘Capitano’) we planted last year were productive and beautiful but all bush beans require bending or kneeling to harvest unless they are in a raised bed. So this year, we are planting a Romano pole bean called ‘Helda’. We will use the traditional teepee structure to support them and thus, there will be fewer aching backs.
During the winter, our Demo Garden team is working every Tuesday from 9:00-11:00. We add a Friday workday during the busy spring/summer months. Anyone is welcome to stop by, help with the work, or just take a tour. Learn along with us as we try new plants, engage in copious gardening conversations, and harvest the fruits of our labor.
