  • Description and Cultural Plant Tips

    S. greggii is a well-shaped mounding  perennial and exceptional bloomer. The aromatic mounds of bright green foliage are covered with brightly covered flowers (pink, purple, yellow, white, salmon, peach, coral and also two-toned.) They are one of the best perfornimg plants  for hot, dry, sunny conditions. Can be used in mid-border perennial gardens, as a ground cover in hot sunny areas and as a small hedge. Some companion plants include Black-Eyed Susan, daylilies, catmint and Agastaches and Penstemons.

Plant in a sunny, well-drained part of the garden slightly above soil grade. Prune it back halfway in early spring to encourage lush growth and good flowering. If it starts to get leggy in summer, trim back  to keep a compact, dense plant.

Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies are attracted to this plant.

    S. greggii has no serious pests or diseases.

  • Master Gardener Comments

I have several S. greggii in my garden. I especially like the coral/salmon colored ones. They go very well with my yellow yarrow and lavender catmint. I only wish I had room for more in my garden. I also like the fact that they are hummingbird magnets. Pick off a flower to taste the nectar and you will see why the hummers love them so much!
