Description and Cultural Plant Tips
R. sanguineum glutinosum is one of the showier Ribes. It has long clusters of pink flowers which bloom in the spring. It can be used in a habitat garden, as a foundation plant or naturized under oaks.
Plant slightly above soil grade in native soils. Add a little aged compost if you have clay soil for better drainage. It does best with slightly acidic to neutral soil pH's. Roots are shallow and fiberous so make usre you add a thick mulch to the surface soil to help keep moisture in the soil below. Can be planted in full sun near the coast but in hotter areas of Marin it will need partial shade in the afternoon. Needs no amendments or fertilizer. Fairly drought tolerant once established but does best with some summer water.
Hummingbirds, native bees, honey bees amd beneficial insects enjoy the nectar from this plant. Birds also enjoy the edible berries latter in the summer.
Fungal diseases may be a problem if planted in poorly drained soil or in a location that has poor air circulation.
