The Program: Unraveling the mysteries of growing garlic and onions! Shop in a market and you may find one or two kinds of garlic. Onion varieties are frequently just as limited. But if you grow your own alliums you open the door to new flavors, shapes, colors, and culinary uses of these savory vegetables. We will discuss the best cultural practices for growing these cool season gems in your garden and how keep them for months.
Jenine Stilson became a UC Marin Master Garden in 2014, and co-leader of the Edibles Guild for the last two years. She grew up on her parents’ almond orchard in the heat of Yolo County, and remains a life-long gardener of edibles. She also gives presentations at various school gardens.
Laura Colvin also became a UC Master Gardener in 2014. She grew up in Novato in a family of gardeners, and has continued this tradition focusing on edibles. She is a member of the Pruning Guild and a mentor in a school garden.
Both Jenine and Laura are contributing writers for “Backyard to Belly” and give presentations at the Indian Valley Organic Farm & Garden.
